A little over a week ago, my 90 year old (who will be 91 in October) "Oma", my grandmother, who was living with my parents who were on vacation, called my machine about six times screaming on it that she needed help. I had gotten home late from work that night and Andy wasn't there with the girls so I immediately left and headed over to their place. I had decided that she was coming home with me and spending the next few days with us until my parents got home so she wouldn't be alone.
The next morning, we were awoken by a big bang, huge deja vu of my MIL last year. She had fallen on her way to the washroom. Thank goodness Andy was there to help her up because I could never have gotten her up. I ended up taking that day off to stay with and monitor her. She said she was fine but she did have some bruising. She stayed with us for the weekend and then against my will and gut feeling, I had to bring her home Sunday afternoon as my parents were due home and we had to go to work on Monday...but, once we arrived there, on her way in, she tripped and fell once again, this time gashing her cheek and breaking her nose which was later confirmed at the hospital once we got the xrays results. Poor Caitie was with me when it happened and she was so scared, but she did a great job being my assistant and ran to get my cell phone from the car to call Andy to come and help and brought me facecloth after facecloth to stop the bleeding.
So my parents still weren't home and I stayed home Monday once again, thank god for an understanding boss! I started looking around for a place to finally place her in, we decided that it was absolutely time and that she can no longer be alone. She has been against this for god knows how long, but after assuring her that she would not be going into a "nursing home" and after the doctor's assessment, she didn't have much of a choice and she agreed.

After some research, I was informed of all the steps that needed to be taken, evaluations, recommendations, etc., etc. I asked how long this process would take since it sounded like quite the lengthy process, I was told oh anywhere from weeks to months, gulp, panic! When I explained that this needed to happen yesterday, they let me in on a little "secret", that if I brought her back to the hospital and explained that I had to go to work and there was nobody to stay with her until we found a place, they have the social workers and doctors and such on hand to evaluate and make recommendations immediately. Of course, this is what I did and they graciously gave her a room and I hit the pavement running on my search!
My uncle came down from Ottawa Tuesday morning and we interviewed with the social worker at the hospital, got the recommendations and started running! We ended up finding a lovely place for her. She'll have her own studio apartment and bathroom and we've been busy shopping to furnish it for her and make it really nice so she'll feel comfortable and happy there. There are nurses on full time staff and she will be semi-autonomous. I'm happy and excited for her and she is doing so much better. They're doing a great job taking care of her at the hospital in the mean time, and I should get the keys today or tomorrow at the latest to go and start setting it up and then we'll move her in on Sunday. I can't wait to see her face when she sees it all ready for her! She's actually looking forward to it and obviously can't wait, it's not fun sitting in the hospital for over a week, but we made great time and huge progress and were so lucky to find something and move so quick.
For now, I'm just exhausted and can't wait to have some rest, although there hasn't been much of that since Caitlin started school this week. On that note, she's doing great and likes her teacher. I'll post some pics later when I have a chance. I haven't been home most evenings since I take my grandmother out every night for her nightly cigarette at the hospital, yes she is almost 91 and still puffing away, god love her!

Holy! You are a great mom, daughter and granddaughter! I am really happy that it all worked out. She deserves to be comfortable and taken care of. She has earned that at 91.
Keep smilin!
Oh Jen, I'm sorry. My husband's grandma had the same issues are yours. In one year, she broke her bones 3 times (once even her nose and wrist). Unfortunately had to put her in a nursing home but a nice one. That cost alot of $$$. She passed away a few days after monther's day. :( She was going to be 92 this year.
This is a hard thing to do. I am not looking forward when I will have to deal with it. :(
Oh my gosh Jen....you have really had your hands full! I am glad that you were able to find a place for her and that she is doing well. It is really hard for them to give up their independence.....I watched my parents fight the battle with my grandparents.
Your grandma sounds like she is full of spunk!!
I got your email today....I have been on the road all day and have not had much time today, but I will reach out to you over the next day or so. Do you have photoshop? That is were I make all of my headers....and really, it is the only way I know how to do blog design.
Okay, now that I wrote you a book, I better get going! Have a great night:)
Lisa
Your Grandma sounds like a hoot! So glad you found a nice place for her to live and so quick too. Try to get some rest soon!
